What is a radio-controlled car?
An RC car is a miniature vehicle equipped with the mechanical and electronic components required to drive it. Steering and throttle commands are sent from a handheld transmitter.
RC cars are available in many scales and configurations, with different power systems, levels of complexity and adjustment possibilities.
Common types of RC car
The hobby includes many different vehicles, such as RC buggies, crawlers, drift cars and on-road cars.
Electric or combustion power?
Two principal power systems are used:
- electric motors powered by a battery;
- internal-combustion engines powered by suitable model fuel.
Each has advantages and limitations. Electric power is generally the simplest option to operate and maintain.
Common scales
Popular sizes include 1/10-scale RC cars and 1/8-scale RC cars, alongside many smaller and larger scales.
RTR and kit RC cars
RTR radio-controlled cars
RTR means Ready to Run. An RTR model is supplied assembled with its motor, electronics, transmitter and receiver. A battery and charger are often included, but some RTR packages require them separately, so always check the product description.
RC car kits
A kit is intended to be assembled. Depending on the model, equipment such as the motor, speed controller, steering servo, radio system, battery and charger may need to be selected separately. This allows you to choose components suited to your preferences and intended use.
