The Focke-Wulf Fw 189A-1
The Focke-Wulf Fw 189 was a German tactical reconnaissance aircraft developed in the late 1930s. It first flew in 1938.
Its two engines were installed in nacelles extending into tail booms, with a heavily glazed central crew nacelle between them. This layout gave the crew the wide field of view needed for short-range observation and reconnaissance.
The Fw 189 located enemy positions, monitored troop movements, observed the battlefield and helped direct artillery fire. It was widely used on the Eastern Front, where Soviet troops called it “Rama”, referring to the rectangular frame formed by its booms and tail.
German crews called it “Uhu”, meaning eagle owl, and “Fliegendes Auge”, or flying eye, because of its role and excellent visibility.
