About the real Lancia Stratos Turbo

The Lancia Stratos holds a unique place in sports-car history. Unlike many rally cars derived from production models, it was developed primarily for competition.

Its spectacular design was created by Marcello Gandini for Bertone. The wraparound windscreen, short wheelbase and wedge-shaped body made it one of the most recognisable Italian cars of its era.

The Stratos excelled in rallying and helped Lancia win the World Rally Championship for Manufacturers in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

The spectacular Stratos Turbo

The Stratos Turbo took the concept much further. Developed for circuit events and mixed-discipline competitions, it received extensively modified bodywork.

Its dramatically widened arches and major aerodynamic changes transformed the original shape. A turbocharger also substantially increased engine performance.

The no. 539 car represented by Tamiya competed in the 1977 Giro d’Italia Automobilistico with Sandro Munari and Piero Sodano.

This unusual event combined different types of stages and surfaces, demanding exceptionally high-performance cars.

Its spectacular body and red, green and white Alitalia livery made it one of the most impressive versions of the celebrated Italian sports car.
