What is a 3D puzzle?
These puzzles could also be described as model kits because they recreate real-world subjects such as vehicles, locomotives and animals in miniature.
Unlike many traditional model kits, most 3D puzzles are assembled without glue. Their parts are supplied on wooden or cardboard sheets and fit together through precisely cut slots and joints. When glue is required, this is stated on the product page.
Two main types: static and mechanical 3D puzzles
Static 3D puzzles
Static models are designed for assembly and display without a mechanical function. They include animal puzzles and a variety of miniature vehicles and decorative models.
Mechanical 3D puzzles
Mechanical puzzles include moving functions. Depending on the model, an elastic-band or spring-powered mechanism may turn the wheels, move engine pistons or operate other features.
