Paints for model kits
Painting adds colour, depth and realism to a model. The result depends on surface preparation, paint type, thinning, application method and drying time. The three major families used in scale modelling are acrylics, enamels and lacquers.
Why painting matters
Paint reproduces the materials and finish of the real subject, helps unify parts made from different colours of plastic and prepares the model for decals and weathering. A careful finish begins with clean, properly prepared surfaces.
Acrylic paints
“Acrylic” covers several different formulations. Some are water-based, while others use alcohol or proprietary solvents. Always use the thinner and cleaner recommended for the exact range.
Advantages
- Fast drying.

- Convenient cleaning for water-based ranges before curing.

Lacquer paints
Lacquers are valued for fast drying, fine layers and a durable finish, particularly with an airbrush.

- Strong adhesion and resistance when applied correctly.
- Fine, smooth finish.
- Fast drying between light coats.
Limitations
- Powerful solvents and significant fumes.
- Requires effective ventilation and suitable protective equipment.
- Can attack underlying paint or plastic if used too heavily or with incompatible products.
Brush painting
- Mix the paint thoroughly.
- Thin it according to the manufacturer's guidance.
- Use a suitable brush and avoid loading it up to the ferrule.
- Apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat.
- Allow each layer to dry before the next.
- Avoid repeatedly brushing acrylic paint once it begins to set.
On larger surfaces, controlled strokes and correctly thinned paint help reduce brush marks.
Airbrushing
An airbrush can produce thin, even coats, soft camouflage edges and controlled shading. Results depend on paint viscosity, air pressure, nozzle size, distance and trigger control. Test the mixture before spraying the model. Use a spray booth or effective extraction appropriate to the paint and wear suitable protection.
Thinning paint
Thinning improves flow and helps control coat thickness. There is no universal ratio: it varies with the paint range, age of the paint, nozzle, pressure and technique. Begin with the manufacturer's recommendations and adjust on a test surface. Incompatible thinner may cause clumping, poor adhesion or a damaged finish.
Primer
Primer reveals scratches and imperfect joints, creates a uniform base colour and can improve paint adhesion. Apply it in light coats over a clean surface. Primer does not replace sanding or repair: defects visible before colour coats should be corrected first.
Finish types
- Matt: low reflection, often used on military and weathered subjects.
- Satin: restrained sheen suitable for many painted surfaces.
- Gloss: reflective finish used for polished subjects and often as a smooth base for decals.
A final varnish can adjust the sheen and protect paint or weathering, provided the products are compatible.
Metallic paints
Metallic finishes show every surface defect. Careful sanding, a suitable undercoat and thin, even application are important. Different metallic shades can distinguish panels without excessive contrast.
Weathering effects
Washes, filters, dry brushing, pigments, chipping and streaking can suggest use and exposure. Work gradually and refer to photographs of the real subject. Test compatibility between base coat, varnish and weathering products before applying them to the model.
Common beginner mistakes
- Applying a coat that is too thick.
- Using an unsuitable or inconsistent thinner.
- Trying to achieve full coverage in one pass.
- Handling paint before it has cured.

Storing model paints
Close containers carefully, clean paint from the rim and store them upright away from heat, frost and direct sunlight. Label mixed colours and keep all products out of reach of children. Follow local rules for solvent and paint disposal.
