Radio-controlled cars combine miniature mechanics and electronics. Understanding their components helps you maintain, upgrade and drive your vehicle more effectively.

1. Mechanical components: the RC car’s structure and movement
- Chassis: the vehicle’s base, supporting all other components. Depending on the model, it may be made from plastic, aluminium or carbon fibre.
- Suspension: oil-filled dampers and springs absorb impacts and stabilise the vehicle.
- Suspension arms: connect the wheels to the chassis and maintain the suspension geometry.
- Steering links: transmit movement from the steering servo to the wheels.
- Anti-roll bars: reduce body roll to improve stability in corners.
- Differentials: allow driven wheels to rotate at different speeds when cornering.
- Driveshafts and transmission: transfer motor power to the wheels.
- Wheels and tyres: selected according to the surface, such as track, dirt or tarmac.
- Brakes: mechanical or electronic depending on the model.
2. Electronic components: control and power
- Motor:
- Electric: brushed or brushless depending on the vehicle and required performance.
- Nitro engine: runs on suitable model-engine fuel.
- Electronic speed controller (ESC): controls motor power and, depending on the model, braking and reverse.
- Steering servo: converts a radio command into mechanical steering movement.
- Receiver: receives commands from the transmitter.
- Battery:
- NiMH: straightforward and robust.
- LiPo: lighter and capable of high output, but requires appropriate handling and charging.
- Transmitter: the handheld radio controller, generally with a steering wheel and trigger or two sticks.
3. Other important components
- Body shell: protects internal parts and gives the vehicle its appearance.
- Cooling system: fans and heat sinks help control motor and ESC temperatures.
- Braces and guards: bumpers, skid plates and side protection reduce impact damage.
- Additional modules: depending on the model, these may include telemetry or a gyro.
