Model putty, seams and sanding: achieving clean assemblies
A visible seam can spoil an otherwise careful model. The best result begins by correcting the fit before adding filler. Use the smallest suitable amount, let it cure fully, sand with controlled grades and check the repair under primer.

What is a seam on a model?
A seam is the meeting line between assembled parts, such as fuselage halves, wing sections, engine nacelles or a separate insert. It may be correct, like a real panel boundary, or unwanted, like a gap, step or moulded joint that should disappear.
Should every seam disappear?
No. Consult drawings and photographs where possible. Removing a real panel line creates an inaccurate surface, while leaving a manufacturing joint visible creates an artificial one. Decide what the line represents before sanding.
Correct the fit before using putty
Dry-fit the parts
Assemble without glue and inspect the joint from several angles. Check whether internal parts, locating pins, paint, flash or warped surfaces prevent closure.
Find the obstruction
Remove only the material that is actually causing the problem. A gap closed by correcting an internal bulkhead is better than a forced joint filled from outside. Excessive pressure can distort the model or cause the seam to reopen later.
When should filler be used?
Use filler when a correctly aligned joint still has a depression, pinhole, narrow gap or surface defect. Structural problems and large misalignment should be corrected mechanically before cosmetic filling.
Main types of modelling filler
Traditional solvent-based modelling putty
Convenient for small gaps, scratches and blending. It bonds well to many plastic surfaces and sands readily after curing. Apply thinly: thick masses may shrink, remain soft internally or attack delicate plastic. Provide suitable ventilation.
Water-based or acrylic filler
Useful for small seams and areas where excess can be smoothed with a damp tool before curing. It reduces sanding in difficult locations, but may be less suitable for deep structural repairs.
Epoxy putty
A two-part material for large gaps, reshaping and reconstruction. It can be sculpted during its working time and usually shrinks little, but careful mixing and longer curing are required.
Cyanoacrylate as filler
CA can fill very fine seams and hardens to a durable surface. It should be sanded soon after curing because it may become harder than the surrounding plastic. Vapour, rapid skin bonding and brittleness require careful handling.

Which product for which defect?

How to apply filler cleanly
- Clean and dry the surface.
- Mask close to the seam if surrounding detail needs protection.
- Apply only enough product to fill the low area.
- Shape or remove excess using a method compatible with the filler.
- Allow full curing before sanding.
- Repeat with a thin second application if necessary.
A large mound creates unnecessary sanding and increases the risk of damaging nearby detail.
Limit the sanding area
Low-tack masking tape placed beside the seam protects surrounding rivets and panel lines. Remove it according to the filler's working method so that it does not tear a partly cured edge.
Understanding abrasives
Start only as coarse as necessary. Progress through increasingly fine grades to remove the scratches left by the previous one. Exact grades depend on the filler, surface and desired finish. Wet sanding with compatible paper reduces dust and can give a finer finish.
How to sand a seam
- Confirm that the filler is fully cured.
- Level the highest area with a controlled abrasive.
- Use a sanding block on flat surfaces.
- Move to finer grades as the seam becomes flush.
- Clean the dust and inspect under directional light.
- Apply a light primer check coat.
Flat surfaces
Use a rigid block to avoid creating a hollow on either side of the seam.
Curved surfaces
Use flexible abrasive and follow the contour without flattening it. Rotate the model and inspect the silhouette frequently.
Narrow areas
Use shaped sanding tools, folded abrasive, fine files or a water-smoothed filler to reduce access problems.
Protecting surface detail
Mask raised or recessed detail close to the repair. Sand along the joint with short controlled movements rather than over a broad area.
Restoring panel lines
If sanding removes a recessed line, restore it with a scriber and a guide. Make several light passes. Recreate rivets only when needed and practise on scrap plastic first.
Checking the result with primer
Touch alone cannot reveal every wave, scratch or pinhole. A thin, uniform primer coat makes defects visible by removing changes in colour and reflectivity. Inspect under angled light, correct the remaining problem, then prime the repaired area again. See the primer guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does every model need filler?
No. Accurate preparation and fit may leave only minor seams or none at all.
Can filler correct a badly aligned assembly?
It can hide a depression but cannot properly correct the underlying geometry or restore strength.
Which grit should I use?
Use the least aggressive grade that levels the cured product efficiently, then progress finer. There is no single grit for every filler.
Why does a seam reappear after painting?
The adhesive or filler may not have cured fully, the joint may move, or the repair may still be slightly low. Allow curing and check under primer.
Can CA replace putty?
For some fine, stable seams, yes. It is not ideal for every repair and must be handled safely.
Should primer be reapplied after correction?
Yes, a light local coat verifies the repair and restores a consistent base.
