Gluing model kits: adhesives and assembly techniques

Clean assembly depends on matching the adhesive to the material and joint. Plastic cement, cyanoacrylate, PVA-type products and epoxy work in different ways. Test-fit first, apply the smallest useful quantity and allow enough curing time.

Which materials must be glued?

Polystyrene

Most injection-moulded model-kit parts are polystyrene. Dedicated plastic cement can soften and weld compatible surfaces.

Clear parts

Canopies and windows are particularly vulnerable to fogging, crazing and visible adhesive marks. Use an appropriate clear-parts product and handle them carefully.

Resin

Plastic cement does not normally bond resin. Cyanoacrylate or epoxy is commonly used after cleaning and preparation, following the resin and adhesive manufacturer's guidance.

Metal and photo-etched parts

Photo-etched brass and other metals normally need cyanoacrylate, epoxy or a specialist adhesive. Remove grease and provide sufficient contact area.

How plastic cement works

Plastic cement is usually solvent-based. It softens compatible polystyrene surfaces; pressure brings them together and the joint hardens as the solvent evaporates. This produces a weld rather than simply leaving a layer between the parts.

Regular liquid cement

Useful for many fuselage, wing and structural joints. It offers a balance between flow and working time. Apply it sparingly with the supplied brush or a precision applicator.

Extra-thin cement and capillary action

Extra-thin cement flows through a narrow joint because surface tension draws the liquid along the gap. Hold accurately fitting parts together, touch the applicator to the seam and allow capillary action to carry the cement.

  1. Dry-fit and align the parts.
  2. Hold them securely without excessive pressure.
  3. Touch a small amount of cement to the joint.
  4. Keep the assembly still until the initial bond forms.
  5. Allow full curing before sanding or stressing the seam.

Keep fingers away from wet cement. Solvent reaching a fingerprint can permanently mark softened plastic.

Thicker cement or tube glue

A thicker adhesive stays in place, fills a little space and often gives more adjustment time. It is useful when capillary action is impossible, but excess can squeeze out and may take longer to cure.

Cyanoacrylate: when should it be used?

Cyanoacrylate (CA or super glue) bonds resin, metal, photo-etched parts and many mixed-material joints. Thin CA flows readily; medium or gel forms offer more placement control.

Advantages

  • Fast bond.
  • Works on materials that plastic cement cannot weld.
  • Can secure very small details.
  • Some types can fill a narrow seam.

Limitations

  • Can bond skin and eyes almost instantly.
  • Often forms a brittle joint under impact.
  • Vapour may leave white bloom, especially around clear parts.
  • Short working time can lock poor alignment in place.

PVA and clear-parts adhesives

Suitable PVA-type or dedicated canopy adhesives generally dry clear and are less likely to attack transparent plastic. They allow adjustment and can often be cleaned with water before curing, but are not intended for highly stressed structural joints.

Epoxy

Two-part epoxy offers strength, gap filling and longer working time for heavy resin or metal parts. Mix the components in the specified ratio and allow full curing.

Which adhesive for photo-etched metal and resin?

Use tiny amounts of CA for small photo-etched details. For larger metal or resin parts, select CA or epoxy according to the contact area, weight and adjustment time. Roughening a hidden bonding surface may improve mechanical grip when appropriate.

Prepare parts before gluing

Remove gates, seams, dust and grease. Adhesive is not a substitute for correcting poor fit. Scrape paint from a polystyrene-to-polystyrene bonding surface when a solvent weld is required, taking care not to damage visible areas.

Dry-fitting

Assemble without adhesive to check fit, alignment and the assembly sequence. Dry-fitting reveals interference, warped parts and gaps before the joint becomes permanent. It also shows where clamps or tape can be positioned.

Applying adhesive correctly

  • Use the smallest quantity that wets the joint adequately.
  • Apply cement to the mating surface or closed seam, not across visible detail.
  • Work in short sections on long joints when necessary.
  • Remove excess only with a method suitable for that adhesive; wiping solvent cement can spread damage.
  • Do not return contaminated adhesive to its container.

Holding and aligning parts

Use tape, clamps, elastic bands or purpose-made holders. Check several axes: a tailplane can look correct from above but be tilted from the front. Compare wing dihedral, tail alignment and landing-gear stance before the glue sets.

Fuselages and wings

Before joining fuselage halves, confirm that the cockpit, bulkheads and wheel wells do not prevent closure. Work progressively and preserve alignment. For wings, verify the leading and trailing edges, dihedral and root fit. Correct the underlying fit instead of forcing a joint closed with excessive pressure.

Small parts

Place a tiny amount of adhesive on a palette and transfer it with fine wire, a needle or a micro-applicator. Support the model so that the part does not move under its own weight.

Gluing canopies and clear parts

Ordinary solvent cement can craze clear plastic, while CA vapour can fog it. Prefer a dedicated clear-parts adhesive unless the manufacturer specifically recommends another method. Test on spare clear sprue and keep adhesive away from visible glazing.

Can you glue over paint?

A bond is usually strongest between clean material surfaces. Paint between polystyrene parts prevents a true solvent weld. Mask or scrape bonding zones before assembly. Some small painted details may be attached with a compatible adhesive, but test first.

Setting and curing time

Initial grab is not full strength. Solvent trapped inside a seam or filler can continue shrinking. Follow the product instructions and allow adequate time before sanding, painting or loading the joint.

  • Handling the assembly before it has cured.
  • Using plastic cement on resin or metal.
  • Failing to check alignment from several directions.
  • Applying unsuitable glue to clear parts.
