You do not need a fully equipped workshop to begin aircraft modelling. A few well-chosen tools allow you to remove, prepare, hold and assemble parts accurately. Add specialist tools only when a project requires them.

Side cutters for model kits
Dedicated side cutters remove parts from the sprue while limiting stress on the plastic. Never twist or tear a part free: this can create cracks, white stress marks or missing material.
The two-cut technique
- Make the first cut a short distance from the part, leaving a small section of the gate.
- Make a controlled second cut closer to the surface.
- Finish the remaining mark with a knife, file or abrasive.
Fine single-blade or flush cutters can produce a very close cut on suitable polystyrene, but they are delicate. Do not use them on hard metal wire, very thick gates or materials outside the manufacturer's specification.
The precision knife
A modelling knife trims gates, scrapes mould seams, cuts masking tape and performs many fine tasks. Use a sharp, undamaged blade: a blunt blade needs more force and is more likely to slip. Cut away from hands and body, work on a cutting mat and cover or remove the blade when it is not in use.
Files and abrasives
Files remove material and shape edges; abrasive papers, sticks and sponges refine the surface. Grain numbers are broadly inverse to aggressiveness: a lower number removes material faster, while a higher number produces a finer finish.
- Coarse to medium: initial correction and hardened filler.
- Medium to fine: gate marks and seams.
- Very fine: surface refinement and polishing before gloss or metallic finishes.
Progress through grades instead of trying to erase deep scratches with a very fine abrasive. A rigid sanding block keeps a flat surface flat; a flexible sponge follows curves. Narrow sanding strips and shaped tools help in confined areas.
Tweezers and holding tools
Tweezers place cockpit controls, antennas, decals and other small parts. Straight, angled and reverse-action versions serve different tasks. Grip gently to avoid launching a part across the room or marking soft plastic.
Clips, clamps, elastic bands and low-tack tape can hold assemblies while adhesive sets. Pressure should close the joint without deforming the part. Always dry-fit and decide where the holding tool will sit before applying glue.
Pin vice and micro-drills
A hand-held pin vice drills holes for antennas, rigging, exhausts, locating pins and fine details. Manual control is usually safer than a powered rotary tool on small plastic parts because it creates less heat and removes material more slowly. Start with a fine pilot hole, keep the drill aligned and do not force it. Browse drilling tools.
Measuring tools
Metal ruler
A metal ruler supports straight measurement and cutting. Keep fingers away from the blade path.
Calliper
A calliper compares diameters, thicknesses and spacing. It is useful for selecting rod, tube or drill sizes, but apply very little pressure to delicate plastic.

Scribing tools
Scribers restore recessed panel lines lost during sanding. Use tape or a rigid guide, make several light passes and deepen the line gradually. Trying to cut the full depth in one stroke invites slipping. Remove debris with a soft brush and check the line under primer.
Riveting tools create repeated surface marks. They are optional and require practice on scrap plastic before use on a model.
Cutting mat and work area
A self-healing cutting mat protects the table, improves contrast and provides a measured surface. Choose an adequate size from our cutting mats.
Keep the work area clean and divide tools, parts and consumables into defined zones. A bright adjustable lamp reduces eye strain and makes seams and surface defects easier to see. A light-coloured tray can prevent small parts from disappearing.
Safety and maintenance
- Replace damaged or blunt blades safely and dispose of them in a rigid container.
- Wear eye protection when cutting hard or springy material.
- Control sanding dust; use wet sanding where suitable and appropriate respiratory protection.
- Follow adhesive, paint and solvent safety instructions and provide effective ventilation.
- Keep sharp tools and chemicals away from children and pets.
- Use each tool only for materials permitted by its manufacturer.
