Primer for model kits: purpose, selection and application
Model primer is a preparatory coating applied before the main paint. It can reveal defects, unify different materials and colours, and provide a suitable base for a compatible paint system. It cannot replace cleaning, filling or sanding.

What is model-kit primer?
Primer is formulated as an intermediate layer between the prepared model and colour coats. Products vary: some are fine surfacers, some emphasise adhesion and some are designed for a particular material or paint family. Always check the manufacturer's stated compatibility.
Is primer compulsory?
No. Some paints can adhere to clean polystyrene without it. Primer becomes especially useful after filling and sanding, on mixed materials such as plastic, resin and metal, beneath demanding finishes, or when you need to inspect seams before painting.
What does primer do?
Reveal defects
A uniform coat makes scratches, pinholes, steps and imperfect seams easier to see under angled light.
Unify the surface
Filler, resin, photo-etched metal and different plastic colours can show through paint differently. Primer creates a more consistent visual base.
Support adhesion
A compatible primer can improve the grip of later coats, particularly on properly prepared resin or metal. It will not adhere well to dust, grease or release agent.
Prepare the colour
The primer colour influences coverage and the final appearance. White supports bright and pale colours; black deepens shadows and metallic effects; grey is neutral and useful for inspection.
Primer as a defect detector
Apply a thin check coat over a repaired seam. Once dry, inspect it under directional light. A dark line, shadow or break in reflection can indicate a remaining low spot or scratch. Correct the defect rather than burying it under more primer.
Main primer families
Model primers include water-based acrylic products, alcohol or solvent-based formulations, lacquer-type primers and aerosol surfacers. Their thinning, spraying, odour, adhesion and reaction with plastic vary. Do not assume that all products labelled “acrylic” are compatible with the same thinner.

Primer colours
Grey primer
A versatile neutral choice. It shows surface defects clearly and works beneath many colours.
White primer
Useful under white, yellow, red and other bright or translucent colours because it reduces the number of colour coats required. Surface defects can be slightly harder to read than on grey.
Black primer
Useful under some metallic finishes, dark colours and pre-shading approaches. It can make pale top colours require more coverage.

How to choose a primer
- Material: confirm compatibility with polystyrene, resin, metal or the actual surface.
- Topcoat: check that primer, thinner and paint system can be layered safely.
- Application: aerosol, airbrush or brush according to the product.
- Fineness: aircraft surfaces and small scales benefit from a primer that does not bury detail.
- Safety: select a product you can use with adequate extraction and protection.
Preparing the model before primer
- Complete structural assembly and seam work.
- Remove sanding dust.
- Clean grease and fingerprints using a method safe for the materials.
- Allow the model to dry completely.
- Mask clear parts, openings and areas that should remain unprimed.
- Mount the model or subassembly so it can be sprayed without touching wet surfaces.
Applying aerosol primer
Shake the can for the period specified by the manufacturer. Spray in a well-ventilated or properly extracted area, at the recommended temperature and distance. Begin the pass beside the model, move smoothly across it and release after passing the opposite edge. Several light passes are safer than one heavy coat.
Do not warm or modify an aerosol unless its manufacturer explicitly provides a safe procedure. Keep it away from heat and ignition sources.
Applying primer with an airbrush
Mix and thin only as directed for the exact product. Use the recommended nozzle and pressure range, test the spray pattern first and apply thin, overlapping passes. Clean the airbrush with a compatible cleaner immediately after use.
How much primer should be applied?
Enough to create a consistent inspection and painting surface, but not enough to soften edges or fill recessed detail. Primer should not be used to hide a large scratch, gap or step. Repair those defects directly.
Should primer be sanded?
Yes, when the product is designed to be sanded and has cured fully. Very fine abrasive can remove dust, slight texture or a small imperfection. Avoid sanding through raised detail or leaving an uneven patch.
Correcting defects revealed by primer
- Let the primer cure.
- Mark the defect if it is difficult to relocate.
- Sand, fill or re-align as required.
- Blend the repair into the surrounding surface.
- Clean the area.
- Apply a light local primer coat and inspect again.

How long before painting?
“Touch dry” is not necessarily fully cured. Follow the manufacturer's stated drying and recoat time, adjusted for temperature, humidity and coat thickness. Rushing can cause fingerprints, lifting, cracking or poor adhesion.
Painting over primer
Inspect the surface, remove dust and apply compatible colour in thin coats. If masking is required, allow sufficient curing first and use suitable low-tack tape.
Using primer to inspect seams
Primer is one of the best checks after joining fuselage halves, wing roots or separate inserts. View the area from several angles under a strong light. A joint can feel smooth while remaining visible once colour is applied.
Primer and panel lines
Heavy coats can soften recessed lines and rivets. Use thin passes. If sanding or filling removed detail, restore it before the final primer check rather than trying to carve through a thick coating later.
Primer and transparent parts
Mask canopies and windows carefully. Overspray can reduce transparency and some primers or solvents may craze clear plastic. Test products on spare clear sprue when uncertain.
