Building an aircraft model kit means recreating, at a reduced scale, an aircraft from the pioneering years of aviation through to modern military and civil types. The hobby involves much more than joining plastic parts: preparation, dry-fitting, gluing, painting, decals and, on advanced projects, detailing and weathering all contribute to the result.

What is a plastic aircraft model kit?
An injection-moulded kit contains reduced-scale parts representing an aircraft's fuselage, wings, tail, cockpit, landing gear, propeller or jet components, clear parts and, where relevant, weapons or external stores. The parts are normally attached to frames called sprues and must be removed, cleaned and assembled in the order explained by the manufacturer.
Part count alone does not define quality or difficulty. Engineering, fit, instructions, surface detail and the complexity of the chosen version are equally important.
What is inside an aircraft kit box?
Sprues
Sprues hold the injection-moulded parts. Clear components such as the canopy are usually placed on a separate transparent sprue.
Instructions
The manual gives the assembly sequence and usually lists recommended paint references. Read it before cutting parts so that you can identify subassemblies that must be painted before they become inaccessible.
Decals
A decal sheet may include national insignia, registrations, unit markings, numbers, stencils and one or more colour schemes.
Additional materials
Depending on the exact kit, the box may also contain photo-etched metal, masks, resin, 3D-printed parts or other accessories. Always check the contents of the specific reference rather than assuming that every edition is identical.
Understanding the main aircraft scales
The scale is the ratio between model and real aircraft. At 1/48, each linear dimension of the real aircraft is divided by 48. The larger the denominator, the smaller the model.
- 1/72 aircraft: compact and well suited to large collections or physically large aircraft.
- 1/48 aircraft: a popular balance between display size and accessible detail.
- 1/32 aircraft: imposing models with space for extensive detail, but requiring more room.
- 1/24 aircraft: very large display models whose cockpit, engine and surface finish can become projects in themselves.

Choosing your first aircraft model
Difficulty does not depend on scale alone. A good first kit usually has a reasonable part count, clear instructions, straightforward joints and an achievable colour scheme. A single-engine fighter may be easier than a multi-engine bomber with many clear panels and complex landing gear.

The main periods represented
Early aviation and the First World War
Early aircraft reveal structures unlike modern machines. Biplanes may require rigging, which adds a specialised stage to the build.
Second World War
This is one of the largest aircraft-modelling fields. Subjects include the Spitfire, Bf 109, Fw 190, P-51 Mustang, A6M Zero and Corsair, alongside bombers, transports and specialised aircraft. Numerous variants and unit markings allow very different models of the same basic type.
The jet age
Aircraft such as the MiG-15, F-86, MiG-21, Mirage and F-4 Phantom II introduce different shapes, finishes and engineering from piston aircraft.
Civil aviation
Airliners, light aircraft, transports and historic civil machines offer a field that is just as varied as military aviation.
Aircraft model manufacturers
Important brands include Academy, Airfix, Eduard, Heller, HobbyBoss, ICM, Italeri, Meng, MiniArt, Revell, Special Hobby, Tamiya and Trumpeter.

Tools and part preparation
A beginner needs only a modelling side cutter, precision knife, abrasives, fine files, tweezers and a cutting mat. A pin vice, micro-drills, scribers and measuring tools can be added later. See the aircraft modelling tools guide and our modelling tools.
After removing a part, clean the gate, mould seam and any flash. Dry-fit before gluing to check alignment and identify gaps while they are still easy to correct.
Gluing the model and building the cockpit
Polystyrene cement softens compatible plastic surfaces so that they weld together. Resin, metal and clear parts require other adhesives, such as cyanoacrylate, a clear-parts adhesive or, in some cases, epoxy. See the guide to model-kit glues and assembly.
The cockpit is often a model within the model, with a seat, instrument panel, controls, rudder pedals, consoles and harnesses. It normally has to be assembled and painted before the fuselage is closed.
Painting and primer
Brushes are ideal for small parts, cockpits, details and touch-ups, and can also cover larger areas with suitable paint and technique. An airbrush makes thin, even coats, soft camouflage and tonal variation easier, but it is not compulsory for beginners.
Primer can unify the surface, reveal remaining defects and improve adhesion within a compatible paint system. It is especially useful after filling and sanding or when several materials are present.
Canopies, decals and varnish
Protect clear parts from scratches, fingerprints, solvent cement and overspray. Mask canopy frames and use an adhesive suitable for transparent parts.
Decals reproduce the markings. A smooth, correctly prepared surface reduces the risk of silvering, where air trapped under the transparent film creates a pale appearance. Setting solutions can help decals conform to detail when used as directed.
Gloss, satin and matt varnishes may protect layers, separate finishing stages or establish the final sheen. Check product compatibility before combining paint, decals, weathering and varnish.
Weathering and aftermarket accessories
Weathering can suggest exhaust deposits, oil, dust, staining, fading and wear. It should remain consistent with the aircraft, period, service and environment rather than simply adding as many effects as possible.
Aftermarket accessories include photo-etched metal, resin, 3D-printed parts, masks, decals, wheels, seats and cockpit or weapon details. They can enhance a project but are not required for an attractive model and may demand specialised adhesives and techniques.

Building a collection
A collection can follow a period, country, air force, conflict, manufacturer, unit, pilot, aircraft family or scale. Using one main scale preserves the relative size of different aircraft, but there is no obligation to restrict yourself.

Which scale is best for a beginner?
Both 1/72 and 1/48 can work. Kit design and complexity are generally more important than scale alone.
Is a 1/32 kit always more detailed than a 1/48 kit?
No. A larger scale permits more detail, but the manufacturer decides what the kit includes.
Must a model be painted?
No, but paint is central to reproducing the aircraft's colours, materials and finish.
Can I paint only with brushes?
